I came to embrace this title after seeking help for my body’s ongoing pain. Five years ago, I truly felt as though I had gone through some very tough times in the not-so-distant past. I was worn down physically, mentally, and emotionally, simply moving on autopilot. I’m forever grateful to my spiritual guide, Father George W. Hurley, for never leaving me and leading me to Dr. Davis’s former office.
From the very beginning, the approach was different. Rather than just relying on x-rays, I stood on a foot machine and was guided through various turns and questions. Dr. Davis then evaluated my condition, explained why I had been falling, made an adjustment, and directed me to other areas of his facility for exercises. I was expected to complete these exercises every time I visited. The irony was that I saw him on the last day he would be using his smaller office, as he was moving across the street to a much larger, newly renovated facility. After waiting a few weeks, I was able to resume my treatment in this beautiful, larger space. Even the bathrooms featured inspirational messages reminding me to live my life well.
Dr. Davis’s method was to use his skills, his facility, and his caring, knowledgeable staff to help me begin healing. He introduced me to exercises to do at home, Himalayan salt water, the need to stay hydrated, acupuncture, physical therapy, massage therapy, and his unique chiropractic service. This service involved sitting in a specially designed chair while a computer and instrument accurately pinpointed areas of my back that needed adjustment.
Due to the severity of my pain, I needed to visit more than once a week. It would be a process, not a quick fix. Along with additional exercises provided by the physical therapist, I learned to integrate these exercises into my daily life—doing squats while brushing my teeth, marching, walking the dog, etc.
Through regular visits and interactions with other staff members, I began to recognize areas of my past that needed attention and healing. I was transforming, evolving spiritually as well. As my pain lessened, my focus on spiritual development increased.
My own motto has become, “Pain will make you move, and exercise will move the pain.”
Dr. Alfred Davis often called me “young lady.” At first, I thought it was simply easier than using my full name, Yelverton-Spruce. In retrospect, perhaps he was planting a thought subconsciously, encouraging me to think of myself as youthful, vibrant, inquisitive, and open to trying new things. A lady stands tall, with shoulders back, proudly embracing her own truth.
He also had a calm, pleasant demeanor—neither too loud nor too meek, just perfectly measured, even during the 2020 pandemic. His blessed assurance was like a calling. He believed in his ability to help me heal. He knew he had been gifted with the power of healing hands and the wisdom to teach alternative methods for recovery.
Dr. Davis possessed a remarkable gift of discernment. He handpicked each member of his team—people who truly believed in the potential of alternative methods for pain relief and healing, and who shared his calm, positive energy. It wasn’t just one member; everyone I encountered at his center embodied these qualities.
Dr. Alfred Davis was, metaphorically, like Moses, leading people out of the wilderness of pain. Now, it’s up to his carefully chosen team to continue the journey and take it to the next level. Prayerfully, 40 more years. 316 Orange Road, Montclair, NJ (973) 783-0158. I encourage anyone suffering from pain—whether it’s in the back, hips, or elsewhere—to visit this place for yourself.
